Global Recycling Day takes place every March 18th, its purpose is to raise awareness of the importance of recycling and encourage people to take action to reduce waste and protect the environment.
This year, we are joining the initiative by bringing together key information from across our prepared fruit world with an aim to promote sustainable practices and highlight the benefits of recycling.
We're convinced that moving away from a linear model of "production-consumption-disposal " and towards a circular "production-consumption-recycle" model will offer great benefits to all.
WHAT GOES AROUND
Despite growing demand for a move away from plastic packaging we're still at a stage where plastic provides optimal protective packaging for all our prepared fruit along their journey to consumption.
Firstly, plastic packaging helps to protect prepared fruit from damage during transportation, ensuring that they reach you in the freshest possible condition. The clear plastic also allows to easily see the fruit inside, which in turn helps reduce food waste.
Plastic packaging helps to extend the shelf life of prepared fruit by protecting it from moisture, light, and air.
Furthermore, plastic packaging is lightweight, making it more cost-effective to transport and reducing the carbon footprint associated with transport.
Above all, plastic is a widely recyclable material meaning the cycle of life can be extended to recreate future products, avoiding disposal and continuing the cycle.
Plastic packaging is a smart choice for us and consumers who want to ensure that the prepared fruit stays fresh, look great, and lasts longer.
COMES AROUND
Recycling plastic is one of the most important things we can do to protect our planet. By recycling plastic, we can reduce the amount of waste in landfills, oceans, and other natural habitats, helping to preserve the environment for future generations.
In addition, recycling plastic saves energy and resources, as it takes less energy to recycle plastic than it does to produce new plastic from scratch. This means that we can reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources, reducing our impact on the environment and helping to combat climate change.
Recycling plastic is a simple and effective way to protect the planet and promote sustainability. By recycling our plastic waste, we can reduce our impact on the environment, conserve resources, and build a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.
HOW WE RECYCLE AT PREPWORLD
Before our product gets to store there's a great deal of work we do on site to ensure we recycle wherever possible.
Let's take a look at our core recycling areas:
- ♻️ Inbound cardboard packaging is taken to a local paper mill and is recycled back into paper pulp.
- ♻️ Inbound plastic packaging is grouped together, then taken to a plastic extruder where it is cleaned and granulated. This is then used to produce more plastic material.
- ♻️ Fruit waste is condensed then transformed into a mix of cattle feed for local farms and also processed by anaerobic digestion.
Now you know a little more about what's happening on site, here's what we commit to with our outbound packaging:
- ♻️ We work to an absolute minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled material (subject to availability of material) and are actively working to increase this number.
- ♻️ We always aim to ensure our packs are fully recyclable where possible.

LET'S DO THIS TOGETHER
As a company we've set our sights on a world of good by reducing our environmental impact but we believe that we can achieve more together.
Working together has numerous benefits for both individuals and the planet. By pooling our resources and knowledge, we can develop more effective and efficient packaging and recycling strategies that are better suited to the unique needs and challenges of our local communities.
Collaboration enables us to amplify our impact and reach more people with our message, which can help to raise awareness and encourage positive behaviour change.
By joining forces and working towards a common goal, we can create a better, cleaner, and more sustainable future for ourselves and future generations.
We would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, or questions and would welcome feedback in the belief that we can achieve more together for our environment through our use of packaging, so please do get in touch.
